New IBM PC Upgrade Policy
by Tom Mack
August 4, 1983
At the July 18, 1983 meeting of the Capital PC User Group, Don Withrow
announced that, if you had one of the older IBM PC's (i.e. shipped before
January 1982) with the 8088 chip soldered onto the mother board, IBM would
replace it at no charge with the new IBM PC mother board that has a
replacable 8088 chip. Coincidently the new mother board also allows up to
256K on it.
Unfortunately, I have been unable to confirm this with any of the IBM
Product Centers. What I have obtained is the following IBM memorandum:
"June 9, 1983
To: All NAD Branch Managers
All NMD Branch Managers
NAD/NMD Regional Managers
NAD/NMD Directors of Marketing
NAD/NMD Center Managers
A new version of the 64/256KB memory expansion option for the
IBM Personal Computer is now beign used to fill all 64/256KB
memory expansion card orders. This version has been designed
to enhance memory card performance when used with highly
interactive software requiring large amounts of memory. This
type of application currently represents a very small percent of
personal computer users; however, we have decided to take the
following steps to assure a continuing high level of product
performance for all our customers.
Since customers with IBM memory expansion cards (32KB, 64KB
and 64/256KB) may have experienced intermittent false parity
check 2 errors, we are making available a free exchange program
to allow those customers the opportunity to obtain the new
version of the 64/256KB card at no charge. This offer will be
in effect from today until December 31, 1983 and covers all IBM
Memory Expansion Cards sold prior to July 15,1983. This card is
required only in highly interactive environments requiring
large amounts of memory (e.g. 3270 emulation). Accordingly the
exchange is not required by all customers.
You should instruct your Marketing Representatives and System
Engineers to inform customers who report intermittent parity
check 2 errors to call the National Support Center (NSC) and
report this as a normal service call. The National Support
Center can be reached by dialing toll-free (800) 428-2569 in
the continental U.S.; Puerto Rico, Hawaii and Alaska
customers may call collect to (312) 986-7451. The NSC will
typically indicate that the following actions will be taken:
1. For on-site service customers, a CE will be dispatched to
perform the memory expansion option exchange.
2. For pickup and delivery service customers, a courier
will be dispatched to pickup the failing system unit for
service.
3. For carry-in customers, the customer will be instructed
to bring the failing system unit to the nearest
service/exchange center.
4. For mail-in customers, the customer will instructed where
to send the failing system unit.
5. For per call customers, the customer will be instructed
where to send the failing system unit.
This exchange will not affect the price for service agreements
in force at the time of exchange. However, renewals will be
billed at the then current 64/256KB memory expansion service
price. Since this exchange program affects a small percentage
of IBM Personal Computers, there will not be a direct customer
announcement. You should contact the local CSD branch manager
in unusual situation.

If anyone else succeeds in trading in their old mother board (i.e.
with a maximum of 64K of RAM on it) for the new IBM mother board
(i.e. with a maximum of 256K of RAM on it), please leave a message
on my RBBS-PC bulletin board (703) 759-5049 in Great Falls, Virginia.
